Texas Claims First National Title with Victory Over Texas Tech
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Texas Longhorns made history on Friday night by defeating Texas Tech 10-4 to clinch their first Women’s College World Series championship title. Star pitcher Teagan Kavan led the way, securing her fourth win and a save in the series while achieving a remarkable feat of allowing no earned runs over her 31 innings pitched. Kavan’s outstanding performance earned her the title of Most Outstanding Player.
Mia Scott shone brightly, hitting a grand slam, while Leighann Goode added a 3-run homer to anchor the Texas offense. The Longhorns showcased their batting prowess with Kayden Henry contributing three hits and both Reese Atwood and Katie Stewart adding two hits each.
On the other side, Texas Tech struggled as their ace pitcher NiJaree Canady was pulled after just one inning, having allowed five runs on five hits. Despite her stellar season, culminating in a recent NIL deal exceeding $1 million, Canady couldn’t replicate her success in this crucial game. The Red Raiders, cheered on by former Texas Tech football star Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany, attempted a comeback but fell short.
After losing to Oklahoma in the championship series two out of the past three years, Texas overcame significant challenges, including defeating Oklahoma en route to the title. Their commanding 10-0 lead following Scott’s fourth-inning blast ultimately set the tone for the night. Despite Hailey Toney’s late-game effort for the Red Raiders, which included a two-run single in the fifth and another RBI later, the Longhorns held firm to take home the championship trophy.
This historic victory marks a monumental moment in Texas softball history, solidifying their place among the nation’s elite teams.
