Hillcrest High School Renames Football Field in Honor of Paralyzed Player
DALLAS – In a heartfelt tribute during the 50th reunion of the Class of 1975, Hillcrest High School has officially renamed its football field to honor former student John McClamrock, who was tragically paralyzed during a game in 1973.
McClamrock suffered a neck injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 51, and just weeks after, his mother and sole caretaker also died. Despite the immense challenges he faced, McClamrock’s spirit and determination left a lasting impact on his classmates.
At the renaming ceremony, Franklin Field was rededicated as John McClamrock Field, with former teammates reflecting on his legacy. “John taught us that you can still find joy, no matter how tough the adversity,” shared one of his classmates, Marla Margol. She described the event as both emotional and uplifting, emphasizing the connection that still resonates within the Hillcrest community. “It’s a beautiful day… I think John and his mom had something to do with that.”
The ceremony, which took place on May 3, 2025, drew a commendable turnout, demonstrating the enduring influence McClamrock has on those who knew him. His story continues to inspire generations, showcasing resilience and the importance of community support.
This memorial serves not only as a tribute to McClamrock’s life but also as a reminder of the power of overcoming challenges, fostering unity, and celebrating the legacies of those who have faced adversity with courage.
