North Texas Couple Remembers Their Childhood Experiences with Measles Decades Later

Recent Measles Outbreak Sparks Urgent Calls for Vaccination in Texas

Clayton and Kathryn Nash, both affected by measles during their childhoods, are alarmed by the recent outbreak of the virus in Texas, which highlights the dangers of vaccine hesitancy. At ages 68 and 72, respectively, the Nashes recall a time before the measles vaccine was introduced in the 1960s, a period marked by widespread infection and serious health complications. They’ve witnessed firsthand the havoc wreaked by this preventable disease, with Clayton recalling the discomfort of severe itching and fever that kept him out of school for over a week.

The outbreak, which began in January, has resulted in over 600 confirmed cases and two fatalities among children, reflecting a troubling resurgence of what was once on the brink of elimination. The couple believes that those who have experienced the repercussions of such diseases should advocate for vaccination. "When you see diseases like measles making a comeback, it feels like we’re going backwards,” Kathryn stated.

Health experts emphasize the importance of the MMR vaccine, which effectively prevents measles, mumps, and rubella. With a reported 97% effectiveness after two doses, the vaccine is deemed safe by the CDC, yet some populations, including those born before 1957, are not required to receive it due to presumed natural immunity.

Despite their own lack of vaccination, the Nashes advocate for public health measures urging vaccinations. "Get vaccinated. Definitely,” they implored, underscoring the vital role of vaccination in safeguarding communities against outbreaks. As the Texas outbreak continues to grow, public health authorities and community leaders are rallying to address misinformation and bolster vaccination efforts to prevent further spread of the virus.
