Japan’s Evolving Identity: Embracing Korean Heritage Amidst Historical Shadows
The Japanese imperial family, renowned for its unbroken lineage, claims descent from the sun goddess Amaterasu. However, less known is the lineage of Emperor Kammu, who ruled from 781 to 806 and traced his roots to a Korean king. This acknowledgment of Korean heritage contrasts sharply with the tumultuous history between Japan and Korea.
From 1910 to 1945, Japan’s brutal occupation of Korea included forced labor, cultural erasure, and the imposition of Japanese identities on Koreans. The legacy of this occupation still affects many Zainichi, people of Korean descent in Japan, who often lack citizenship despite long-term residency. Textbooks in Japan have largely glossed over this oppressive history, complicating national narratives.
In 2001, Japan’s then-Emperor Akihito formally recognized the Korean connection, reflecting a shift toward acceptance. Today, an estimated 400,000 Zainichi contribute significantly to Japanese arts and culture. Prominent figures like novelist Yu Miri, who explores themes of identity and belonging, and filmmaker Soni Kum, whose works address displacement, illustrate the complexity of Zainichi experiences.
Younger generations are witnessing a cultural metamorphosis. Artists such as rappers Verbal and Yuki Chiba embody their Japanese-Korean identities as a badge of authenticity. Filmmaker Yang Yonghi delves into her family’s North Korean heritage, bridging cultural gaps.
As Japan’s population declines, the integration of Zainichi and other cultural identities becomes increasingly vital for national cohesion. Changing attitudes among younger Japanese, who are less influenced by historical prejudices, signal a path toward a more inclusive society. As designer Yoon Ahn notes, “Tokyo is changing, Japan is changing,” shedding old narratives in favor of a vibrant, multicultural future.
