Fort Bend County Judge KP George Switches to Republican Party, Citing Corruption in Democrats
Texas – In a surprising political shift, Fort Bend County Judge KP George announced on Wednesday that he is leaving the Democratic Party to join the Republican Party. This declaration, made at a Sugar Land hotel, stunned many in the Texas Democratic community, as George has served as a Democrat since his election in 2019.
In his announcement, George criticized the Democratic Party, labeling it “corrupt” and accusing it of embracing “radical political ideologies and positions.” This political realignment comes as he faces significant challenges, including ongoing legal troubles with criminal charges in two separate cases.
George’s party switch isn’t unprecedented. According to Politico, between 1994 and 2023, 173 state lawmakers across the U.S. transitioned between parties, with 83 Democrats moving to the Republican side and 23 Republicans opting for the Democrats. In Texas alone, there have been nine notable party switches, reflecting a broader national trend of politicians reassessing party loyalty.
Prominent historical switches among Texas politicians include figures like Phil Gramm and Ralph Hall, both of whom transitioned from the Democratic to the Republican Party in the 1980s and 2000s. Others, such as Ryan Guillen and José Manuel Lozano, have similarly made the switch in recent years, further illustrating a shifting political landscape in the state.
As KP George embarks on this new chapter, the implications for both his career and the political dynamics within Fort Bend County and beyond are being closely monitored. With his move, George not only alters his political affiliation but also adds a new layer of complexity to local and state politics in Texas.
