California Fugitive Apprehended 30 Years After Escaping FCI Dublin

Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams is investigating how ten inmates escaped from a New Orleans jail. This case highlights ongoing issues within the justice system, including incidents of prison escapes.

In a separate but notable event, Ronald Keith Harvey, a fugitive who escaped from a California prison over 30 years ago, was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals in Nevada City, California, on June 12. Harvey, 79, had fled the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, on January 21, 1994. Deputy U.S. Marshal Cruz Moya, who has handled Harvey’s case since 2024, noted that the apprehension was possible due to a data sweep revealing an address linked to Harvey.

Initially sentenced to 60 months for running a large marijuana operation—more than 600 plants and firearms—Harvey had four years left on his sentence at the time of escape. The Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, which is infamous for housing high-profile convicts like Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin related to the college admissions scandal, was closed in 2024 after allegations of sexual abuse surfaced.

Moya remarked that not everyone is equally adept at evading capture, emphasizing that some individuals, like Harvey, are particularly skilled at remaining hidden from law enforcement. The arrest demonstrates the ongoing efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service in locating fugitives long after they have escaped, reflecting both the challenges and successes in fugitive apprehension within the justice system. Authorities continue to address prison security issues to prevent future escapes.
