As Pride Month kicks off, officials and supporters gathered in Washington D.C. to raise the Pride flag at the John A. Wilson building, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community amidst ongoing struggles for equal rights. Pride Month honors the legacy of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal event in the history of LGBTQ+ activism in the U.S., which arose from police raids at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan. This year’s festivities are especially poignant for advocates feeling the impact of recent political challenges.
In addition to D.C.’s celebrations, Boston is among numerous cities hosting Pride events. The Boston Pride for the People parade is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It features a route starting at Clarendon Street near St. James Avenue, progressing through the city and culminating at the Boston Common, where the accompanying festival runs from noon to 6 p.m. In addition to the parade, there will be a block party later in the day, further enriching the community’s celebration.
