Texas Leaders Prepare for Upcoming Protests as National Guard Activates
Texas city leaders are bracing for a series of protests related to immigration enforcement, but the unexpected activation of the Texas National Guard has raised eyebrows. Governor Greg Abbott has announced the deployment of troops to strategic locations across the state, though he has refrained from providing specifics regarding troop numbers or locations. “As it concerns our tactics and things like that, we don’t disclose those publicly,” Abbott stated, emphasizing a focus on maintaining safety.
Recent "Anti-ICE" protests have already emerged in cities like Dallas and Austin, resulting in multiple arrests and minor injuries to law enforcement officers. Hundreds gathered in San Antonio, brandishing banners with slogans such as “no human is illegal.” While local officers support the right to protest, they emphasize the necessity of keeping both people and property safe. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus underscored, “If police intervention becomes necessary, it will be carried out with strong emphasis on public safety.”
Interestingly, local leaders were not informed that the Texas National Guard would be involved in managing these demonstrations, implying a disconnect between state and city officials. Chief McManus expressed a willingness to collaborate: “If they happen to be deployed when we’re here, we will make contact with the commander of that force.”
As tensions rise in the wake of these protests, officials are seeking clarity on the National Guard’s involvement in their cities. FOX 4 News is following up with municipalities in North Texas to determine if communities should expect an increased military presence in the coming days.
This proactive approach by state leadership signifies an effort to avoid the unrest witnessed in Southern California amidst recent immigration controversies.
