Lawsuit Filed Following Chaotic Dallas Cheerleading Event
DALLAS – A significant lawsuit seeking $1 million in damages has emerged from the aftermath of a chaotic incident that unfolded during the all-star national cheerleading championship at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in March. Representing several injured attendees, the lawsuit targets the convention center, Varsity Brands, and Varsity Spirit, calling for enhanced event security measures.
The distressing scene was triggered by a confrontation between two parents, which led to a false alarm of an active shooter. Video footage captured the ensuing panic, causing thousands to flee in terror. Fortunately, Dallas police later confirmed that no active shooter was present.
Attorney Ashlea Schwarz, who advocates for the plaintiffs, detailed the severe consequences of the stampede. Injuries ranged from broken bones and head trauma to emotional distress, with some attendees separated from their families for hours. One notable case involved a mother who lost consciousness amid the crowd rush, suffering from two brain bleeds, while a 13-year-old girl required surgery after her hand became trapped in a door and found refuge beneath a semi-truck.
Schwarz emphasized that the primary concern lies not in how the chaos began but in the inadequate response from event organizers once the stampede commenced. "Just because you weren’t shot does not mean that you don’t have an injury," she stated, underlining the significance of this case in highlighting security flaws at large-scale events.
The lawsuit aims not only to seek compensation for medical and psychological damages but also to advocate for essential changes in safety protocols. Schwarz anticipates that this may lead to further legal actions as others affected have begun voicing their complaints.
Responses from the defendants, including Varsity Brands and Varsity Spirit, are still pending. As the case unfolds, advocates hope it will prompt much-needed improvements in crowd safety management at future events.
