Hundreds Rally in Austin to Protest Nationwide ICE Detentions

Protest in Austin Against Immigration Raids Turns Violent

A largely peaceful protest in downtown Austin on Monday evening turned chaotic when law enforcement deployed tear gas to disperse demonstrators opposing recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. Organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation’s Austin branch, the protest, which began around 7 p.m. at the Capitol, drew several hundred participants marching against rising immigrant detentions and the perceived lack of due process for those affected.

Despite the organizers announcing the end of the gathering shortly after 8 p.m., a significant portion of protesters remained, leading to escalating tensions with law enforcement. Officers stated that the crowd needed to vacate the streets, but when some attempted to return to the federal building, police responded with tear gas canisters, causing panic.

Valerie Cruz, a first-generation American who spoke at the event, emphasized the disparity in immigrant experiences, stating, “Not everyone has that privilege” of entering the U.S. legally. Similar protests took place simultaneously in Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston, motivated by demonstrations in Los Angeles against ICE activities.

In California, the deployment of 700 Marines to enforce order amidst escalating protests has drawn sharp criticism. Governor Gavin Newsom condemned this move as a “step toward authoritarianism” and has initiated legal action against the federal government. Eyewitness reports from the Austin protest indicated at least two detentions and concerns over the use of chemical deterrents by law enforcement.

As tensions between protesters and authorities rise nationally, the situation in Austin reflects broader issues of immigration policy and the treatment of undocumented individuals in the U.S. The protests are a call for solidarity and systemic change in how immigration enforcement is handled.
