The historic caisson unit at Arlington National Cemetery is set to resume its duties on June 2, after a two-year hiatus due to the deaths of several horses and the need for facility upgrades. Established in 1948, this tradition involves horse-drawn caisson wagons carrying fallen soldiers to their final resting places, reviving a practice rooted in military history since the 19th century.
The Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as “The Old Guard,” has undergone extensive preparations, including more than $28 million in investments for stables, horse rehabilitation, and improved equipment. Soldiers trained with the caissons are regaining their skills and muscle memory, as they hadn’t performed a funeral since May 2023. Lt. Col. Jason Crawford, commanding the unit, emphasized the importance of training after the interruption.
Despite some challenges, such as a recent incident where nervous horses bolted during practice, the unit has successfully adapted to Arlington’s unique environment. They performed a significant test by carrying the casket of former President Jimmy Carter during his state funeral, laying the groundwork for upcoming ceremonies. Plans involve conducting two funerals a day initially, with expectations of increasing capacity as more soldiers and horses are trained.
Selection for the caisson detachment is competitive, with candidates needing to demonstrate both horsemanship and physical fitness. The care of the horses is paramount, reflecting the soldiers’ dedication, which is essential for the solemnity of the funerals. The first services will honor those killed in action, Medal of Honor recipients, and others, providing meaningful ceremonies for families who have endured a long wait. Senator Tom Cotton expressed both frustration over the previous pause and faith in the soldiers’ commitment to the horses and tradition.
