Texas Tech Track and Field Teams Conquer Big 12 Championships
LAWRENCE, Kan. – In a groundbreaking achievement, the Texas Tech University track and field teams clinched both the men’s and women’s Big 12 outdoor titles at Rock Chalk Park on Saturday night. The men secured their sixth outdoor conference championship, while the women celebrated their inaugural victory.
This dual triumph elevated Texas Tech’s total conference titles to eight for the athletic department this season, marking the most in a single year since joining the Big 12 in 1996, and setting a new record for any school this year.
The men’s team topped the standings with 136 points, significantly ahead of BYU (100.66) and Houston (96). The women’s team also led the field with 127 points, outpacing BYU (112.5) and TCU (86).
A standout performance on Saturday saw the Red Raiders claim five event titles, including victories in women’s discus, women’s high jump, men’s 4×100, men’s 400m, and women’s triple jump. The women’s team, in particular, showcased strength in the triple jump, where a dominant 1-2-3 finish contributed 26 points, solidifying their lead amidst fierce competition from BYU.
In addition to triple jump points, the women garnered crucial scores from high jump (26 points) and discus (16 points). The men also made significant contributions across several events, notably scoring in the 4×100, 200m, 400m, and 5000m, while earning seven additional points in the pole vault.
Head coach Wes Kittley celebrates his 16th overall Big 12 title, including a remarkable haul across various disciplines. Notably, the men did not run a 4×400 relay as their victory was already secured. Despite a two-hour delay in the meet, the Red Raiders completed an indoor/outdoor sweep, taking home all four trophies for the season.
