Texas Democrats Propose Resolution to Ban Senator Ted Cruz from College Sports Events
In an unusual move, Texas Democrats in Harris County have introduced a resolution seeking to ban U.S. Senator Ted Cruz from attending college sporting events featuring Texas teams. The resolution stems from what has been humorously dubbed “The Cruz Curse,” with fans associating the Senator’s attendance with a string of disappointing outcomes for Texas teams.
Harris County Democratic Party precinct chair Bill Kelly, one of the resolution’s co-authors, points to an underwhelming track record, claiming that Texas, Baylor, and Texas A&M football teams have a combined 1-8 record in games attended by Cruz. His recent presence at the men’s basketball national championship game, where the University of Houston squandered a 12-point lead to Florida, further fueled this narrative. Kelly noted that sports bettors have recorded a 15-2 record betting against teams Cruz supports.
"We all agree that the nine scariest words for any college fan are, ‘I’m Ted Cruz, and I’m coming to your game,’" Kelly stated, emphasizing that Cruz’s attendance has become a jinx for teams. The resolution not only calls for Cruz to abstain from attending games but also urges him to refocus on critical issues affecting federal employees, referencing his controversial Cancun vacation during a winter storm.
In response to the proposal, a spokesperson for Cruz argued that the Senator has consistently supported Texas teams through both victories and defeats, quipping, "When Texas Democrats lose, he’s almost always there."
The resolution will move forward to the resolutions committee for a vote, determining whether it will be sent to the County Executive Committee for further consideration. As Texas college sports fervor continues, the impact of political figures in the stands has never been so scrutinized.
