Dallas Native and Professional Basketball Player Jarred Shaw Arrested in Indonesia for Cannabis Violation
DALLAS – Jarred Shaw, a 34-year-old Dallas native and professional basketball player, was arrested on May 7 in Indonesia after authorities discovered over 130 pieces of cannabis-infused candy in his apartment in Tangerang Regency. The raid was initiated following a tip from airport customs officials regarding a suspicious package Shaw had received from Thailand, which contained 869 grams (30.6 ounces) of illegal cannabis candy.
According to Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Chief Ronald Sipayung, during initial questioning, Shaw allegedly admitted to planning to share the cannabis candy with his teammates. Indonesia’s stringent drug laws pose severe consequences; Shaw could face a life sentence or even the death penalty if convicted. Recent reports indicate that around 530 inmates, including 96 foreign nationals, are currently on death row in Indonesia, primarily for drug offenses.
Following Shaw’s arrest, the Tangerang Hawks, his team in the Indonesian Basketball League, swiftly terminated his contract for violating terms of engagement. League chair Budisatrio Djiwandono announced a lifetime ban against Shaw, emphasizing the league’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug involvement: "There is no room for drug users in the basketball world," he stated.
Shaw, who graduated from Carter High School and played collegiate basketball at Oklahoma State and Utah State, joined the Indonesian Basketball League in 2022 and signed with the Tangerang Hawks in 2024. The basketball community is left in shock as Shaw’s actions not only undermine his career but also highlight the profound risks involved in drug-related offenses in countries with strict laws.
