Mysterious Bird Deaths Spark Investigation in San Francisco Bay Area

Stranded and hungry pelicans have become a concern along California’s coast, with International Bird Rescue treating over 400 brown pelicans in 2024 and nearing 200 in 2025. Meanwhile, a troubling mystery has surfaced in East Richmond Heights, a community near San Francisco, where residents report a rising number of birds dropping dead near power lines. Witnesses have heard popping sounds akin to firecrackers prior to the birds’ deaths, prompting alarm and reports of more than 50 dead birds, as indicated by signs in the area.

Maximillian Bolling, a local resident, described instances of birds falling violently from the sky, leading many to believe that the power lines may be hazardous. In response to concerns that birds might be getting electrocuted, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) initiated an investigation. Although PG&E, a local energy provider, initially supplied two deceased birds to the DFW, the examination revealed that they exhibited no electrocution signs, but rather traumatic injuries possibly caused by projectile weapons like pellet guns.

This finding has raised suspicions of potential intentional harm to the birds, leading authorities to involve the Contra Costa County sheriff’s department in the investigation. Despite PG&E asserting that their equipment is compliant with safety guidelines and is not responsible for the deaths, local skepticism remains. Residents are questioning whether a gunshot-like sound could result from a BB gun, or if someone could shoot with such accuracy. As the situation unfolds, wildlife advocates and local communities are watching closely to understand the ongoing peril facing these birds.
