High School Basketball Star Johnny Jackson Overcomes Cancer and Inspires Many
Madison Square Wellness Center, NJ – The converted garage across the river from New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden has transformed into a sanctuary for Johnny Jackson, an 18-year-old basketball star from Ridgewood High School. Recently declared cancer-free after battling Stage 4B Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Jackson is embarking on a remarkable comeback journey.
Diagnosed in August 2024, Jackson faced the potential derailment of his senior basketball season. Undeterred, he likened his battle with cancer to facing a tough rival on the court. “I wanted to beat it just like any opponent,” he said.
In a testament to his resilience, Jackson not only returned to play in the season opener just three days post-chemotherapy but scored 30 points to lead Ridgewood to victory. Despite enduring 12 chemotherapy sessions, Jackson played every game, setting a school scoring record and guiding his team to a third sectional championship in four years. “What he’s doing, as awful as he feels, is nothing short of a miracle,” said his mother, Lynsey.
The inspirational story caught the attention of NBC’s “George to the Rescue” and the Garden of Dreams Foundation, leading to a memorable experience at Madison Square Garden. During a surprise invitation from his favorite player, Knicks star Jalen Brunson, Jackson was celebrated for his spirit and determination.
The wellness center, renovated with care, now features state-of-the-art equipment and space for his family, reinforcing their united front in the battle against cancer. “This is more than just for me; it’s for my family’s strength too,” said Jackson.
With his new wellness center and the encouragement from the Knicks, Jackson’s story continues to inspire, proving that determination and community support can overcome the darkest challenges.
