Richardson ISD Student-Operated Coffee Shop Fosters Real-World Learning

Students Launch Successful Coffee Shop at Richardson ISD

RICHARDSON, Texas – In an innovative initiative blending education and entrepreneurship, students at Richardson ISD’s Math, Science, and Technology Magnet are running their own coffee shop named Brew-tiful Minds, contributing both to their learning and to the school’s PTA fundraising efforts.

Under the guidance of teacher Cassie Cardwell, fifth and sixth graders have been immersed in a real-world business experience. Cardwell initially proposed the project to enliven her reading and social studies curriculum. Student CFO Georgia Roberts conducted market research, utilizing surveys to create an effective financial plan. The leadership team, comprising Davy Cass as CEO and Ellie Bready as marketing director, developed the coffee shop concept, securing an $800 small business loan from the PTA to purchase essential supplies.

Brew-tiful Minds offers a range of beverages, with a unique punch card system and gift cards that families can gift to teachers for various occasions. Principal Dr. Lauren Bolack has become a regular customer, enjoying the convenience of pre-ordering her favorite chamomile tea, delivered with thoughtful messages.

Cardwell expressed pride in her students’ growth, highlighting how the project has fostered teamwork and leadership skills. “The shy kids are finding their voices, and they take responsibility for their actions,” she noted. Kelsey Karcher, Richardson ISD’s Advanced Learning Director, hailed the endeavor as authentic learning, emphasizing its relevance in students’ lives.

Recently, Brew-tiful Minds paid off its business loan, enabling the school to enhance teacher appreciation efforts and further campus initiatives. Looking ahead, this year’s fifth-graders will mentor incoming fifth graders as future leaders in the shop, ensuring the project’s sustainability.
