Richard L. Garwin, a leading figure in the development of the hydrogen bomb and a thoughtful adviser on defense policies, died at 97 at his home in Scarsdale, New York. His son, Thomas, confirmed the news.

Garwin was only 23 when he designed the world’s first fusion bomb, known as Ivy Mike, which was tested in 1952. While Edward Teller and Stanislaw Ulam contributed foundational theories, Garwin’s execution of the design produced a weapon with a force far exceeding that of Hiroshima’s bomb. Despite the gravity of his work, he remarked in a 1984 Esquire interview that he didn’t view the bomb as the defining aspect of his life.

After his early success, Garwin opted for a position at IBM over academia, leading to significant advancements in technology, including contributions to magnetic resonance imaging and touch-screen technology. Meanwhile, he consulted on various national defense issues, advising multiple U.S. presidents from Eisenhower to Biden. He vocally opposed excessive military spending and supported nuclear arms control, advocating for a strategic nuclear balance with the Soviets.

Garwin’s intellect earned him recognition, although he often remained in the background of public consciousness. He held 47 patents and authored approximately 500 scientific papers. His accolades included the National Medal of Science and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Born in Cleveland on April 19, 1928, Garwin’s prodigious talents were evident from a young age. His passing marks the loss of a remarkable polymath whose influence shaped both scientific innovation and global defense strategies, underscoring the complex legacy of nuclear weaponry and the pursuit of peace. He is survived by his two sons, a daughter, five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
