Newly released drone footage captures a troubling incident in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where two brothers, aged 7 and 9, were seen handling a loaded gun. The footage shows them exchanging the firearm while concealing it behind their backs, prompting responses from deputies. On February 16, during this distressing situation, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office intervened after a call to the scene.
In the footage, deputies can be heard urging the boys to drop the weapon. Sheriff John Allen reported that after deputies fired a non-lethal round to distract the children, one of the boys accidentally pulled the trigger, causing the weapon to malfunction. Allen emphasized that had the gun discharged, it could have led to a tragic situation where deputies may have had to use deadly force.
Eventually, a deputy approached the boys and successfully disarmed them without any injuries. Fortunately, no arrests were made, and the children remain under their parents’ supervision as authorities conduct an ongoing investigation. Sheriff’s Deputy Connor Otero mentioned that criminal charges could follow as the inquiry continues.
The sheriff’s office highlighted the importance of drone technology in managing the situation swiftly and safely, thereby preventing potential harm. Sheriff Allen noted that this incident underscores the complexities surrounding juvenile crime, mental health, and public safety. He expressed an intention to enhance services and support for juveniles involved with firearms or violent behavior, reflecting a commitment to addressing these critical issues effectively.
