US Reports 1,001 Measles Cases Across 11 States with Ongoing Outbreaks – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Press Release: Measles Outbreak Continues in Texas, Urgent Health Advisory Issued

Austin, TX – The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has confirmed eight additional measles cases, bringing the state’s total to 717 across 32 counties, primarily in West Texas. The recent surge includes cases in Erath, Collin, and Rockwall counties.

The outbreak, ongoing for nearly four months, has resulted in 93 hospitalizations and tragically, two fatalities among unvaccinated school-aged children. Health officials report that less than 1% of recent cases are considered actively infectious.

The DSHS noted that while the total number of cases has stabilized slightly, Texas remains the epicenter of the largest measles outbreak in the U.S., which exceeded 1,000 cases nationwide. Cases have also emerged in neighboring states, including New Mexico and Oklahoma. Notably, the outbreak began in Gaines County, where vaccination rates are alarmingly low, with over 1.7% of the local population infected.

Experts express significant concern as vaccination rates dip, with many parents opting out of required immunizations. "Measles is highly contagious and can spread easily in communities with low vaccination coverage," said Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. "Vaccination is the best preventive measure."

North America is grappling with multiple measles outbreaks, notably in Ontario, Canada, and Chihuahua, Mexico. Measles can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia and brain swelling.

DSHS officials are actively promoting vaccination clinics and educational campaigns to counteract misinformation about vaccine safety. The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine remains crucial in safeguarding children and communities. Health authorities urge parents to ensure their children are vaccinated to maintain herd immunity.
