Elected New York Official Shoots Delivery Driver After Requesting Directions
Chester, NY — A shocking incident has left the town of Chester in dismay after John J. Reilly III, a 48-year-old highway superintendent and licensed firearms dealer, allegedly shot a 24-year-old DoorDash delivery driver. The altercation took place on May 2 when the driver, a West African immigrant, stopped to ask Reilly for directions after his phone died in the wooded neighborhood.
Footage acquired by News12 revealed the horrifying moments. After stepping outside his home, Reilly fired a warning shot and shouted "Go!" as the driver attempted to flee. Disturbingly, Reilly then shot the driver in the back, prompting the young man to drive home, where he collapsed. He was subsequently hospitalized but is on the mend.
According to New York State Police Captain Joseph Kolek, there is no evidence suggesting that the victim had any malicious intent. "He was just out there doing his job, trying to make a food delivery," Kolek emphasized. Family members expressed their terror over the encounter, stating that the driver had inquired, "Is this your order?" before being commanded to leave.
Reilly faces serious charges, including first-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and illegal firearm possession. He is currently held at Orange County Jail with a $500,000 bond. Despite the gravity of the situation, Reilly has not announced plans to resign from his official post.
Chester Town Supervisor Brandon Holdridge stated that the Town Board does not have control over Reilly’s position, emphasizing the complexity of the case. The New York State Police have taken over the investigation after the Chester Police Department recused itself. The community’s outrage remains palpable as residents call for accountability in the wake of this alarming incident.
