DALLAS-FORT WORTH, TX — A new study published in Nature Cities reveals alarming data about urban subsidence across the United States, including Dallas-Fort Worth, which is sinking at an average rate of over 4 millimeters per year. This worrying trend affects more than 34 million Americans, as researchers employed satellite radar measurements to examine 28 of the nation’s most populous cities, each with populations exceeding 600,000.

The findings indicate that all examined cities are experiencing some level of subsidence, with at least 20% of their areas sinking. Houston is identified as the nation’s fastest-sinking city, with over 40% of its area subsiding more than 5 millimeters annually. Comparatively, other cities like New York sank 2.5 millimeters, while Los Angeles recorded a minor decrease of less than 1 millimeter.

The study suggests that groundwater extraction is a primary driver behind this phenomenon, with inadequate management exacerbating risks of flooding and infrastructure damage. Additionally, the impacts of oil and gas extraction contribute to ground deflation, while the sheer weight of urban structures also plays a role.

Local authorities are urged to adopt better groundwater management practices to balance water withdrawals with natural rainfall, which is essential for replenishing aquifers. The implications of this research highlight the urgent need for sustainable urban planning and infrastructure assessment as Dallas-Fort Worth grapples with the realities of subsidence, compounded by climate change and rapid urban development.
