Press Article: Tensions Remain High Between India and Pakistan Amid Ceasefire
In a recent address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that India has merely "paused" its military operations against Pakistan following a tense standoff that raised fears of a fifth war between the nuclear-armed neighbors. Modi’s first speech since the ceasefire highlighted his government’s firm stance against terrorism, insisting there would be no distinction between states and groups associated with terror activities.
The Indian military had conducted missile strikes on May 6, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir—a claim Pakistan vehemently denied. Modi accused Pakistan of opting for aggression rather than addressing terrorism and pledged that India would respond decisively to any future attacks.
Moreover, Modi spoke on the controversial Indus Waters Treaty, suggesting that India’s recent decision to halt water flow to Pakistan marked a significant diplomatic shift, using water as leverage. In response, Pakistan’s Finance Minister urged for the treaty to be reinstated as it was before India’s unilateral actions.
The international community, including U.S. President Donald Trump, has intervened, claiming that diplomatic efforts averted a potential nuclear confrontation. Despite a temporary lull in fighting, which left around 60 civilians dead, military commanders from both nations convened to review the ceasefire, aiming to prevent further escalations.
As Indian authorities reopened 32 airports, military leaders from both countries claimed victory. Pakistan’s military described their recent operations as successful, while India reaffirmed its restraint but warned that threats to sovereignty would meet decisive responses.
With both nations maintaining high alertness, international observers remain watchful for signs of lasting peace or renewed conflict. The situation in Kashmir, a flashpoint for tensions, continues to draw attention amid calls for de-escalation.
