Tattoos: A Journey of Connection Between Mother and Child

In a heartwarming tale of evolution and understanding, a mother-daughter relationship blossomed over the art of tattooing. Initially shocked by her son Mathew’s impulsive decision to get a tattoo in Thailand, their mother, a former rebel herself, grappled with fears of health risks associated with body art. By 2008, as her other child prepared to mark her own skin, her concerns shifted from health to societal perceptions, worried about how tattoos might affect job prospects and long-term regrets.

After relocating to Queensland following her divorce, the mother had missed significant milestones in her children’s lives, creating an emotional distance. Despite their irregular communication, her career in oncology revealed a softer side of her personality as she engaged with patients who shared stories of unrealized dreams, including the desire for tattoos.

By her early twenties, the daughter was heavily inked, a move that understandably unnerved her mother. Yet, during a pivotal moment in 2012 while helping her mother move back to Sydney, an unexpected bonding opportunity arose. The daughter suggested a tattoo to commemorate her mother’s return—surprisingly, she agreed.

Visiting a now-closed local studio, they collaborated on a design: an infinity symbol dedicated to a late friend from the oncology ward. In that brief but transformative hour, the mother discovered the meditative qualities of tattooing, realizing it could be a means of processing emotions, not merely an act of rebellion.

Through this shared experience, they bridged the gap of a decade apart. Today, the mother proudly wears her tattoo, symbolizing not just her friendship but the newfound understanding of self-expression and connection with her daughter.
