Press Article: Thrilling Finale at the 2025 Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam
Astana, Kazakhstan – The third and final day of the 2025 Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam showcased extraordinary performances as heavyweight judokas took the mat, rounding off an event filled with action and remarkable victories.
In the -90kg category, six-time Grand Slam champion Mikhail Igolnikov faced newcomer Egor Malkin. With a well-executed change of direction, Igolnikov secured victory with a swift five-second hold, further solidifying his elite status. Masdar CEO Mr. Mohamed Jamil Al Ramahi presented the medals.
The -78kg final saw Korea’s Minju Kim clash with Japan’s Mao Izumi in a tightly contested match. A single yuko was the difference, with Kim executing a seo-toshi to clinch her first Grand Slam gold, awarded by IJF Education & Coaching Director Mr. Mohammed Meridja.
In the -100kg category, top seed Dota Arai of Japan battled Daniel Eich of Switzerland. After a series of dynamic exchanges and Arai initially scoring a waza-ari, he delivered a decisive uchi-mata for the win. Sport Qory Director Mr. Yerlan Auganbayev awarded him the medal.
Hyeonji Lee of Korea faced off against France’s Julia Tolofua in the +78kg final. A decisive yuko from Lee earned her first Grand Slam gold, with IJF Sport Director Mr. Michael Tamura presenting her medal.
In the +100kg category, Japan’s Hyoga Ota achieved a stellar seventh Grand Slam final against home favorite Yerassyl Kazhybayev. Ota executed a stunning uchi-mata, silencing the crowd and securing gold. Kazakhstan’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Mr. Yerbol Myrzabossynov, presented the medals.
The Kazakh team celebrated additional success with bronze medals for Marat Baikamurom and Bakzhan Baitas in the -100kg division. The tournament closed on a high note, filled with unforgettable moments.
