Press Release: Safety Concerns Arise After Fort Worth ISD Bus Incident
FORT WORTH, Texas — An alarming incident involving a young student and a school bus mix-up has raised concerns about the safety policies of Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD). Eight-year-old David, who has developmental challenges, found himself dropped off a quarter-mile from his home on Oak Grove by a substitute driver unfamiliar with his usual route.
David had expressed his worries to the driver before reaching the stop, questioning her about his safety. Unfortunately, those concerns were dismissed. His grandmother, Amparo Wynn, noted that the driver deliberately ignored David’s pleas, saying she doesn’t take children home, even after he asked twice. Thankfully, David was able to navigate the busy streets back to his grandmother safely, an event Wynn attributes to divine intervention.
The incident has prompted Wynn to demand greater accountability for ensuring student safety. "I don’t want to have to be concerned about going to work, wondering if my kid is going to be on the bus, left in the right spot,” she stated, urging the district to enhance safety measures.
In response, FWISD has acknowledged the issue, prioritizing student safety. The district’s new chief of transportation, Nathan Graf, emphasized the need for immediate and long-term solutions, revealing a driver shortage as a root cause of the problem. Efforts are being made to hire at least 30 more drivers before the next school year, alongside implementing new technologies that would allow for better tracking of students boarding and exiting buses.
As FWISD seeks to address these challenges, parents like Wynn remain vigilant, hoping for improvements to ensure their children’s safety on school transportation.
