LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech University’s women’s basketball team is pleased to announce the hiring of Ashlee Villarreal as the new Director of Basketball Operations (DOBO) for the Lady Raiders. Head coach Krista Gerlich expressed enthusiasm about Villarreal’s return, highlighting her deep-rooted passion for West Texas and Texas Tech.
Villarreal, a Texas Tech alum, previously served as the DOBO for Georgia Tech’s women’s basketball program for six years under renowned coach Nell Fortner. Her experience includes managing day-to-day operations, overseeing logistics such as travel and meals, event planning, and team budgeting. Her keen organizational skills were also on display during her tenure at Central Michigan, where she held the same position for a season.
Gerlich acknowledged Villarreal’s extensive background in elite women’s basketball and her ability to bridge connections among players, staff, donors, and fans. “Our fan base will instantly connect with Ashlee’s passion,” Gerlich stated, emphasizing the significance of bringing someone with Villarreal’s experience back to Lubbock.
Villarreal’s journey includes serving as a graduate assistant for the Lady Raiders while completing her master’s degree in sport management, during which she created recruiting materials and assisted in player scheduling. Moreover, she was a basketball letterwinner at Western Texas College prior to her collegiate career.
With a bachelor’s degree in sport management from Texas Tech, Villarreal embodies the spirit and dedication that the program represents. The Lady Raiders community eagerly anticipates her contributions as she embarks on this new chapter at her alma mater.
