Residents Plead for Action After Series of Crashes at Oak Cliff Roundabout
DALLAS – Frequent crashes at a notorious roundabout on Tyler Street near the Bishop Arts neighborhood have residents calling for immediate intervention from city leaders. Notable incidents, including a recent crash on May 8, 2025, saw a car go airborne, slam into a nearby condo, and catch fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the driver faced penalties for driving without a license.
This was not an isolated occurrence. In February, another driver flew over the same roundabout, damaging a different home. Neighbors have captured these alarming events on video, heightening their concern for safety in the area.
Sydney Richard, who witnessed the latest crash, voiced her frustration, stating, "If people slowed down to figure out where they’re going, they wouldn’t end up in a house." She emphasized the importance of preserving the walkable nature of Oak Cliff, particularly for families and children. The increasing recklessness of drivers poses a threat to the community’s appeal.
Adding to the urgency, a second driver, Maribel Tellez, was arrested following the May incident for driving under the influence, nearly hitting Richard and another bystander.
City Council member Chad West noted that while overall crashes have decreased since the roundabout’s installation, he is advocating for enhanced safety measures including water-filled barriers, additional signage, speed bumps, and reduced speed limits to mitigate the dangers. Residents hope these changes will curb reckless driving and ensure their safety as they navigate the vibrant Oak Cliff neighborhood.
The need for action is critical, as the community rallies for solutions to prevent further incidents.
