Corpus Christi FC to Celebrate Historic Move to Professional Soccer
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On May 10, Corpus Christi FC will celebrate its transition to professional soccer with a significant launch event, a historic milestone for South Texas sports. This gathering will include Mayor Paulette Guajardo, City Council members, USL representatives, and club leadership, showcasing the team’s elevation to League One and its importance for the Gulf Coast region.
Dr. Kingsley Okonkwo, owner of Corpus Christi FC, expressed the broader mission of the club, stating, "This is not just about soccer—it’s about inspiring a generation, uniting a city, and building a legacy." He emphasized the aim to impact lives, create opportunities, and introduce world-class soccer to the local community.
Last October, the United Soccer League granted a League One franchise to Corpus Christi FC, marking it as the first professional soccer team in the Texas Coastal Bend region. The May 10 event will coincide with the Sharks’ League Two home game against Corinthians FC, highlighting a significant step forward for the sport in South Texas.
Fans attending the launch can secure their place in the club’s history by placing deposits for season tickets for the inaugural League One season. These deposits will grant early access to season tickets, making it easier for local supporters to engage with the team.
Lee O’Neill, president of USL League One, praised the club’s efforts in building a fanbase and community around soccer, noting that their strong foundation will help them thrive in League One. The club will host all home games at the Corpus Christi Multi-Sport Complex and Stadium, envisioned as a community hub for sports and youth development. Fans who cannot attend games in person can catch all matches via live streams on CBS and ESPN+.
