Tarrant County, Texas – Funding Cut Reversal for Meals on Wheels
In a sudden policy shift, Texas’ State Health and Human Services Department has rescinded a proposed $450,000 funding reduction for Tarrant County Meals on Wheels. This decision comes as a relief to the organization, which would have faced significant service reductions, including the cancellation of the critical "Home Meds" program aimed at preventing harmful reactions to food and medications for seniors.
The potential cuts, which followed a prior $1.6 million reduction in October and compounded by earlier federal funding freezes, would have severely impacted essential services such as nutrition counseling, social reassurance, participant assessments, and transportation for clients.
"While we’re uncertain why the decision was reversed, we are grateful that the thoughtful consideration was given to the wide-reaching implications it would have had on vulnerable seniors in our community," said Philip Gonzalez, spokesperson for Tarrant County Meals on Wheels. He emphasized that the potential loss of funding would have been a significant setback, disrupting wellness check-ins and transport services vital for seniors to access activity centers and daily meals.
