Tragic Update: Body of 10-Year-Old Girl Recovered in Brenham Floodwaters
Brenham, TX – The search for a 10-year-old girl swept away by rising floodwaters ended in tragedy Tuesday, as her body was recovered by rescue teams, according to Fire Chief Mark Donovan.
Rescuers utilized drones equipped with thermal imaging and K-9s to aid their search efforts in Brenham, involving around a dozen agencies. Operations were temporarily scaled back due to heavy thunderstorms Monday night, but four swift water rescue teams resumed their mission early Tuesday, ultimately finding the girl’s body. She was reported missing around 4 p.m. Monday.
The young victim was a student at Brenham Elementary School. In response to the tragic incident, the Brenham Independent School District announced that support services would be available for students and staff. "Our hearts are with the student’s family, and we ask our community to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the district expressed in a social media post.
As the search concluded, forecasters warned that more severe weather could be on the way, with an anticipated 6 inches of rain expected across parts of southeastern Texas on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Houston. In addition to the flooding concerns, strong rip currents and high tidal flooding threats were expected along Gulf-facing beaches.
As of Tuesday morning, a wide area in Texas, along with parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, was under flood watches. This comes on the heels of severe weather experienced just last week, which resulted in extensive flooding, damage to roadways, and flight cancellations across major airports.
Community members are urged to stay vigilant as the region braces for further adverse weather conditions.
