Bret Boone Named Hitting Coach for Texas Rangers Amid Offensive Struggles
DALLAS — In a decisive move to revive their struggling offense, the Texas Rangers have appointed former MLB infielder Bret Boone as their new hitting coach. This announcement comes on the heels of the Rangers’ disappointing start to the season, where they currently sit at the bottom of the American League in runs scored, totaling just 113.
Boone, who has an impressive playing resume, is set to bring his expertise to Texas for the first time as a member of a major league coaching staff. He will join the team on Tuesday, just in time for their three-game series opener in Boston. His hiring follows the dismissal of offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker, who had been with the Rangers for four seasons.
During his 14-year playing career, Boone was a three-time All-Star, accumulating a .266 batting average, 252 home runs, and 1,021 RBIs across 1,780 games with several teams, including the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres. Interestingly, Boone played under current Rangers manager Bruce Bochy during his time with the Padres in 2000.
The Rangers currently hold a 17-18 record and recently managed an 8-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners, despite their overall offensive struggles. Prior to this win, Texas had endured a rough patch, scoring only 30 runs in a 2-9 stretch. Boone’s immediate goal will be to harness the team’s potential and enhance their hitting performance as they aim for a turnaround this season.
Before his coaching role, Boone engaged in various business ventures and hosted a baseball podcast. His previous experience includes working as a roving instructor and scout for the Oakland Athletics from 2014 to 2015.
