Spectrum Offers $25,000 Reward for Vandalism in East Dallas
East Dallas residents faced significant service disruptions on Saturday after vandals intentionally cut multiple fiber optic lines belonging to Spectrum. The outage affected a combination of internet and cable services, leaving residents and business owners offline for several hours. While Spectrum has not disclosed the number of customers impacted, the company described the incident as a "significant outage."
Spectrum’s facility, located off Chenault Street, was targeted in what appears to be a statewide issue. Criminologist Dr. Alex Del Carmen from Tarleton State University noted that such vandalism is often driven by the high value of copper, even though Spectrum’s fiber optic lines contain none. "It’s a crime of opportunity," Del Carmen explained. "With copper prices rising, criminals seize the chance to make money illegally."
This incident is not isolated; similar occurrences have affected other regions. Just a day prior, residents in the Houston area serviced by Xfinity and Comcast experienced outages due to vandalism that disrupted communication lines.
In response to the East Dallas incident, Spectrum has announced a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. The company is collaborating with the Dallas Police Department to determine if surveillance cameras in the area captured any evidence. Residents with information are urged to contact local law enforcement.
This wave of vandalism highlights a troubling trend affecting communication infrastructure throughout the state, prompting community vigilance and swift action from service providers to ensure public safety and connectivity.
