Michelle Obama Opens Up About Therapy and Marriage on Podcast
In a candid discussion on the "On Purpose With Jay Shetty" podcast, former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed how therapy is aiding her transition into life as an "empty nester." The 61-year-old reflects on the significant changes in her life as her two daughters, Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23, have launched into adulthood. “I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning,” she said, emphasizing that this new phase presents unique challenges and opportunities for self-discovery.
Michelle shared that she feels empowered to make choices solely for herself now that parental and first-lady responsibilities have diminished. “Every choice that I’m making is completely mine,” she noted, indicating a burgeoning independence. Yet, she admitted that unwinding from past habits and navigating feelings of guilt can be unsettling. “I’m getting that tune-up for this next phase,” she added.
An advocate for mental health, Michelle highlighted the importance of therapy, urging others to seek their own form of support. “I believe this is a whole ‘nother phase in life for me,” she explained, championing therapy as a valuable tool for anyone navigating life’s transitions.
In a separate interview on the "Diary of a CEO" podcast, she addressed misconceptions about her marriage to former President Barack Obama, asserting, “If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it.” The couple, married since 1992, have worked through numerous trials together, emphasizing that marriage requires effort and communication. “I try to tell couples… if you’re not getting help, just understanding how things are changing… I just see people quitting,” she urged, encouraging couples to seek therapy before ending their relationships.
Michelle’s openness about her journey serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health and resilience in personal relationships.
