Political Action Committees Invest Thousands in Local North Texas Elections

Press Release: Local Elections in Irving Highlight the Influence of Political Action Committees

Irving, TX – Political action committees (PACs) are shaping local elections just as they do at state and national levels, impacting outcomes significantly. In a recent city council election, two PACs collectively spent over $105,000 to support candidates, underscoring the critical role of local political funding.

Among these, Families for Irving invested approximately $15,500 to endorse candidates who advocate for “traditional family values,” school choice, and single-family housing. “Local elections have a direct impact on residents’ lives,” remarked Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University, noting that ideological commitments often drive PAC support at all levels.

Another group, Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, made headlines by sending out texts during early voting, alleging Las Vegas Sands’ involvement in the election. Though their spending remains undisclosed, they urged voters to resist what they termed a “hostile takeover” of local governance due to Las Vegas Sands’ pursuit of zoning changes for a destination resort with casino elements.

Simultaneously, the Lone Star Conservative Action Fund, which spent over $93,000 backing opponents of Families for Irving, is classified as a “dark money” group. This status allows them to operate without disclosing donor identities, raising concerns about transparency. Political expert Brian Roberts highlighted the potential of PACs to dramatically influence elections, especially with last-minute funding, leaving little time for opposition to organize.

In Fort Worth, various PACs contributed substantially to local candidates, showcasing a broader trend across North Texas. As PACs continue to wield power in elections, the call for regulatory scrutiny of campaign finance practices grows louder, emphasizing the need for transparency in local political funding.
