New Measures Enhance Safety in Fort Worth’s West 7th Street Entertainment District
FORT WORTH, TX – The West 7th Street entertainment district is set to become a safer destination, thanks to newly implemented safety measures. Steel bollards have been installed to control traffic flow, enabling police officers to focus more on proactive patrolling rather than traffic management. Recent statistics reveal a significant 36% decrease in major crime rates in the district compared to last year.
Fort Worth Police Commander Amanda Heise addressed the improvements, stating that the measures have allowed officers to enhance their community presence through increased foot patrols, traffic stops, and citizen interactions. These efforts are critical in preventing violent crimes by discovering firearms, narcotics, and stolen vehicles before they can be utilized in criminal activities.
Despite its reputation as a vibrant nightlife hub, West 7th has faced challenges in recent years with incidents of violent crime, including the tragic murder of Texas Christian University student Wes Smith in September 2023. City leaders are now tackling issues such as underage drinking, drug use, loitering, and violence head-on.
In response, the district has introduced a new safety accreditation program designed for local bars and restaurants. Chaired by local bar owner Chas Taipale, this initiative allows establishments to undergo specialized training to earn a ‘Golden Lasso’ rating. This accreditation signals to patrons that they are entering a safe environment actively maintained by responsible establishments.
Training covers essential topics, including responsible alcohol service, security measures against drink spiking, crowd management, and emergency response protocols. Together with collaborative efforts among law enforcement, local businesses, and community members, these strategies aim to further enhance safety in the district.
In summary, the combined approach of strategic police presence and business accountability prioritizes the well-being of the West 7th Street community.
