“Sinners” Delivers Robust Second Weekend, Classic Star Wars Claims Second Place – NBC New York

Press Release: "Sinners" Defies Horror Genre Expectations with Box Office Success

Ryan Coogler’s horror film “Sinners” is proving to be a remarkable box office success, shattering conventional limits for the genre. In its second weekend, the movie grossed $45 million in the U.S. and Canada, marking only a 6% drop from its stunning Easter opening weekend—the smallest decline since "Avatar" in 2009. "Sinners" has now amassed a total of $161.6 million worldwide, demonstrating a wide appeal that extends beyond core horror fans.

Demographics reveal a shift in audience composition, with a balanced gender ratio this weekend—50% male and 50% female—compared to a predominantly male turnout of 56% last week. The film’s performance has been further bolstered by its availability on premium large format screens, making up 21% of its earnings this past weekend.

Starring Michael B. Jordan, "Sinners" melds horror with elements of drama, action, and musical flair, contributing to its broad appeal. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, remarked, “It’s an absolute phenomenon,” noting that such a minimal drop in its second weekend is rare for a wide release.

Despite high expectations of a significant decline for sequel releases, “Sinners” has defied those odds, positioning itself as a benchmark for cinematic success. Competing against “The Accountant 2,” which debuted in third place with $24.5 million, and a re-release of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith,” which earned $25.2 million, “Sinners” has emerged as a leader in a revitalized box office.

With April showing a remarkable 102% increase in box office revenue compared to last year, the industry is poised for a robust summer season, kicking off with Disney’s “Thunderbolts” on May 2. Dergarabedian aptly stated, “There cannot be a better opening act for the summer movie season than this weekend.”
