Texas Longhorns Triumph Over Texas A&M in Thrilling Opener

AUSTIN, Texas — In a highly anticipated matchup, the No. 1 Texas Longhorns defeated Texas A&M 2-1 in the series opener on Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, in front of an electric crowd of 7,942 fans.

Right-hander Ruger Riojas showcased his talents on the mound, earning his eighth win of the season by throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The junior limited the Aggies (24-17, 8-11 SEC) to just five hits and struck out three, leading the Longhorns (35-5, 17-2) to their seventh consecutive victory.

Texas’ bullpen contributed significantly, as relievers Max Grubbs and Dylan Volantis combined to allow only one unearned run over the final 4 1/3 innings. Volantis sealed the win with a striking performance, recording the last five outs—all via strikeout—to earn his tenth save of the season.

The game’s pivotal moment came when right fielder Tommy Farmer IV blasted his first career home run in the seventh inning, sending a first-pitch breaking ball into the Aggies’ bullpen. This homer electrified the crowd, serving as the game-winning run after A&M managed to score in the eighth inning.

In the third inning, second baseman Jayden Duplantier put Texas on the board with a run-scoring double, marking just his fourth RBI of the year.

This contest marked the first conference clash between the in-state rivals since 2012, heightening the excitement for fans on both sides. The Longhorns aim to capture their seventh straight SEC series as they prepare to face Texas A&M again on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT.
