Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, aged 91, will lead the funeral of Pope Francis on April 26, marking a significant event as Francis will be the first pope in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican. Re, who has dedicated over 50 years to serving in the Roman curia, recently became dean of the College of Cardinals—those who will elect the next pope—but will not be eligible to vote due to his age. He participated in two previous conclaves: one in 2005 that elected Pope Benedict XVI and another in 2013 that saw Pope Francis take office.
Born in Brescia, Italy, Re was ordained in 1957 and holds a doctorate in canon law. His Vatican career began in 1963, leading to roles in the Holy See’s diplomatic service across Panama and Iran. He was pivotal for over a decade as the Substitute for General Affairs of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State and later became the Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, influencing bishop appointments worldwide. Elected a cardinal in 2001, his leadership was respected; Pope Francis acknowledged Re’s ability to challenge him while valuing his insights.
Re recently presided over a memorial service for Francis, calling him “a pilgrim of hope” and urging those present to pray for the late pope. Described as affable and efficient, Re is known for his clear communication and respectful approach to conflicts. As the Church navigates this transitional period, his role will be pivotal in honoring Francis’s legacy while preparing for the selection of a new pope.
