As Tensions Escalate with Pakistan, India’s Military Faces a Crucial Test

Press Release: Tensions Mount Between India and Pakistan Amid Military Modernization Efforts

New Delhi—As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan, the Indian military finds itself grappling with modernization challenges that could impact its response capabilities. The latest friction follows a deadly terrorist incident in Kashmir, which India attributes to Pakistan, prompting calls for retaliation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, under pressure to act decisively, has threatened to disrupt water flow to Pakistan—a significant escalation that has drawn accusations of “war” from Pakistani officials.

The backdrop to this standoff is India’s military overhaul initiated after the downing of an Indian jet by Pakistan in 2019. Modi has since invested billions in defense modernization, seeking international partnerships for arms procurement while bolstering domestic manufacturing. However, a recent parliamentary report revealed that 68% of military equipment remains “vintage,” highlighting a persistent reliance on outdated technology despite some improvements in recent years.

Analysts are cautioning against potential missteps amid ongoing military restructuring, suggesting that Modi may opt for limited strikes rather than full-scale conflict to maintain domestic support without escalating tensions further. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s ruling military establishment has more latitude to engage militarily, raising the risk of an uncontrolled escalation.

India, now the world’s fifth-largest economy, still allocates less than 2% of its GDP to defense—considered insufficient given its challenges. Complications from the Ukraine war have disrupted defense supply chains, further hampering modernization efforts. While India remains the second-largest global importer of military equipment, diversification in suppliers from Russia to the U.S. and France has reshaped its military procurement landscape.

As uncertainty looms, the geopolitical stakes extend beyond the subcontinent, with neighboring China closely monitoring the developments. The potential for a dual-front conflict poses serious implications for India’s military readiness and strategic posture moving forward.
