Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir, once a bustling tourist destination, has turned into a ghost town following a deadly attack by suspected rebels that killed at least 26 people. The little-known armed group responsible for the attack, The Resistance Front (TRF), has raised fears of increased India-Pakistan tensions. The attack has forced all hotels and shops to close, causing a mass exodus of tourists from the picturesque valley.
Local residents, like restaurant owner Mushtaq Ahmad and hotelier Arshad Ahmad, are devastated by the sudden turn of events. The attack, which targeted tourists in the popular beauty spot Baisaran meadow, has left the community mourning the loss of brave individuals like Adil Hussain Shah, who sacrificed his life trying to protect people.
The exodus of tourists has dealt a heavy blow to the local economy, with thousands of bookings being cancelled and hotel owners like Mir Imaad facing financial losses. Economic experts predict a decrease in direct investments in the region, affecting the overall GDP. Despite the region’s heavy reliance on tourism, accounting for only 1 percent of GDP, the impact on the economy is expected to be significant.
Pony-ride operator Abdul Wahid Wani, hailed as a hero for his quick actions during the attack, is now worried about his future livelihood as the tourist industry collapses. The tragic incident has left residents and visitors anxious about the future, with some Indian nationals postponing their plans to visit the Valley. Amidst the grief and uncertainty, the resilient community is coming together to support each other in the aftermath of this devastating event.
