Emergency Supplies Sales Tax Exemption: What’s Covered? – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

The Texas Comptroller’s Office is reminding residents to stock up on emergency supplies this weekend as the state prepares for severe weather. The 2025 Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday will take place from April 26 to April 28, allowing Texans to purchase specific items tax-free.

During the tax holiday, items under $3,000, such as emergency generators and hurricane shutters, are exempt from sales tax. Additionally, items under $300, including emergency ladders and weather radios, are also included in the tax exemption. Those under $75, such as first aid kits and batteries, can be purchased tax-free as well.

Items such as medical masks and cleaning supplies are not included in the tax exemption. However, over-the-counter self-care items like hand sanitizer are always exempt from sales tax if they follow FDA regulations. If sales tax is mistakenly charged on eligible items during the holiday, customers can request a refund from the seller.

For a full list of eligible items and more information, residents can visit the Texas Comptroller’s website. This tax holiday provides an opportunity for Texans to prepare for potential emergencies without the added cost of sales tax, making it easier for families to stay safe during severe weather events.
