OpenAI has recently requested a federal court to prevent Elon Musk from unfairly attacking it through a lawsuit he filed last year. The filing alleges that Musk has been attempting to take down the artificial intelligence start-up, causing harm to the company. OpenAI stated that Musk’s actions are anti-competitive and against the firm’s mission, leading to their decision to file a countersuit to stop him.
The ongoing feud between Musk, a former founder of OpenAI, and the company stems from disagreements regarding the direction of A.I. technology. Musk sued OpenAI and two of its founders last year, accusing them of prioritizing commercial interests over the public good. OpenAI has since refuted these claims and has become a significant player in the A.I. industry, attracting millions of users.
OpenAI’s plans to shift control of the company from the nonprofit to its investors have also been a point of contention. Musk made a bid with a consortium of investors to purchase the assets of the nonprofit controlling OpenAI for over $97 billion, which was rejected by the company’s board of directors. OpenAI has described Musk’s bid as “fake” and accused him of misrepresenting their efforts to change their corporate structure.
Additionally, a coalition of nonprofit, labor, and philanthropic leaders has filed a petition to the California attorney general to investigate OpenAI’s attempt to convert into a public benefit corporation. This move reflects the ongoing legal and corporate battle between Musk and OpenAI regarding the future of the company and the direction of A.I. technology.
