Texas Governor Sets Special Election Date Following Lawsuit Threat
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced a special election to fill the Congressional seat left vacant by the death of Democratic U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner, after being threatened with a lawsuit by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Turner passed away just a few weeks into his first term in Congress, leaving Texas’s 18th Congressional District without representation.
The special election, scheduled for November 4, will allow residents of the solidly Democratic district, which includes parts of Houston and Harris County, to choose their new representative in the U.S. House. Abbott’s decision comes after accusations that he delayed calling the special election to benefit the GOP’s majority in Congress.
Abbott cited election issues in Harris County as the reason for the delay, stating that rushing the special election would harm voters’ interests. Candidates vying for the seat must submit their applications by September 3, with early voting set to begin on October 20 and Election Day scheduled for November 4.
This move by Abbott follows a threat of legal action from Democrats, who alleged that the delay in calling the special election was politically motivated.
