USA Fencing stated that Sullivan’s participation was in line with rules set by the International Fencing Federation, and Turner was disqualified for failing to fence an eligible opponent. Paxton’s Civil Investigative Demand aims to uncover potential deceptive practices by USA Fencing.
In response to the investigation, Paxton criticized USA Fencing for potentially violating Texas consumer protection laws and undermining women’s sports. USA Fencing has not publicly responded to Paxton’s claims.
Reuters reported that USA Fencing adopted its policy on transgender and nonbinary athletes in 2023, prioritizing inclusion in sports. The organization stated that it will continue to adapt its policies based on evolving research and changes in the Olympic and Paralympic movement.
