A battle took place in a Dallas County courtroom on Friday regarding documents not provided to defense attorneys in the new trial of convicted “Texas 7” killer Randy Halprin. Halprin, a member of the gang that escaped from prison and killed an Irving police officer in 2000, attended the hearing where the district attorney sought to disqualify one of his defense attorneys due to his past work in the DA’s office. The state was supposed to provide over 100 boxes of records to the defense, but defense attorneys stated they had not received any. This led to Judge Lela Mays ordering the DA to hand over all digitized documents to the defense by Monday.
A motion filed sought to disqualify another defense attorney, Heath Harris, alleging a conflict of interest due to his past work in the DA’s office. Harris denied any involvement with Halprin’s case and accused the DA of stalling. The judge will hear evidence on whether Harris should be disqualified in April. Halprin, one of the two remaining “Texas 7” members, had his conviction overturned in November due to the presiding judge’s antisemitism. The appeals court ordered a new trial for Halprin.
