Two individuals have been arrested in Texas for violating the state’s strict abortion laws. Maria Margarita Rojas, 48, and Jose Cendan Ley, 29, were arrested on charges of practicing medicine without a license and performing abortions. Rojas, known as Dr. Maria, operates three clinics in Waller, Cypress, and Spring counties. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a temporary restraining order to shut down the clinics, accusing them of employing unlicensed workers who performed abortions in violation of the Texas Human Life Protection Act.
The state’s strict abortion laws were enacted in 2021, outlawing the practice with narrow exceptions for cases where the pregnant person’s life is at risk. Texas was among the states to pass trigger bans in anticipation of the Supreme Court revoking federal protections for abortion following the overturning of Roe vs. Wade in 2022.
Paxton’s office conducted an extensive investigation into Rojas’ clinics, working with the Waller County District Attorney to prosecute the case. Paxton stated that he will do everything in his power to protect the unborn and hold those who violate the state’s pro-life laws accountable.
The suspects have had their bonds set at $200,000 for practicing medicine without a license and $500,000 for the abortion-related charge. The case has sparked controversy and renewed debates over abortion rights in Texas, where strict laws have made the practice increasingly difficult to access. The defendants are currently facing serious legal consequences for their actions.
