US President Donald Trump plans to discuss ending the war in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing optimism about the chances of peace. Negotiators have already discussed dividing up assets as part of potential concessions. Trump is seeking Putin’s support for a 30-day ceasefire proposal that Ukraine has accepted, amidst ongoing heavy aerial strikes. Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has indicated that Putin accepts the philosophy of the ceasefire and peace terms, with discussions last week being described as positive and solution-based.
Putin has outlined numerous details that need to be negotiated before a potential agreement can be reached, including demands for ironclad security guarantees as part of any long-lasting peace treaty. Moscow has firmly opposed the deployment of European troops to provide security guarantees for Ukraine post-ceasefire. French President Emmanuel Macron has asserted that Russia’s permission is not needed for Ukraine to request allied forces on its territory.
In the midst of these diplomatic developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the replacement of the chief of general staff of the armed forces, with Andriy Gnatov taking over to improve efficiency and combat experience within the military. The Ukrainian military is undergoing reorganisation to enhance coordination and combat effectiveness. Defence Minister Rustem Umerov highlighted the ongoing transformation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with Gnatov bringing over 27 years of military experience to his new role as chief of general staff.
