Australian influencer issues apology after taking baby wombat – NBC New York

American influencer Samantha Strable has issued an apology after sparking outrage for snatching a baby wombat from its mother while in Australia. The incident, which was captured in a video posted on social media, led to threats of deportation from Australian authorities. Strable explained that she acted out of concern for the joey’s safety, fearing that the mother wombat would attack her.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident an outrage, while Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated that an investigation was being conducted to determine if Strable had breached her visa terms. Strable voluntarily left Australia before the investigation was completed.

The animal involved was identified as a common wombat, a protected marsupial native to Australia. Strable claimed that she found the wombats on a road and, concerned for their safety, picked up the joey to ensure it was not sick or injured. Animal welfare experts criticized her handling of the joey, citing the risk of harm by dangling it by its forelegs.

In her apology, Strable acknowledged that she did not handle the situation well and expressed regret for any distress caused. A wombat expert noted that the joey appeared to have a skin disease called mange, which requires treatment for survival. Strable did not disclose her current location to the media.

The incident has raised questions about wildlife protection and responsible behavior towards animals, prompting calls for greater awareness and respect for Australia’s unique wildlife.
