A tragic late-night crash on Interstate 35 in Austin resulted in five fatalities and multiple injuries, including a child and an infant. The collision involved 17 vehicles and was described as “very large and very complex” by police. Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, has been charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault in connection with the crash. The southbound lanes of I-35 were closed into the next day as first responders worked at the scene, which was littered with mangled vehicles and debris.

Police have not yet released details on the circumstances that led to the collision, as the investigation is still ongoing. In the aftermath of the crash, community members like Edgar Viera tried to help those involved despite not having the proper tools to assist effectively. Solomun Weldekeal Araya is currently in custody at the Travis County Jail, although it is unclear if he has legal representation at this time. Authorities are continuing their investigation into this tragic event in hopes of shedding more light on what led to such a catastrophic collision.
